Ashford is a city bracing for danger, where warning bells carry across the harbour and red sails haunt the distant sea. As the companions seek passage west toward abandoned Westwatch, uneasy eyes follow their movements and strangers take a troubling interest in the Pale Flame’s mission. Meanwhile, old acquaintances resurface, forbidden knowledge waits behind guarded shelves, and Sister Maren’s continued secrecy begins to weigh heavily on those risking their lives beside her. The road to Westwatch is drawing closer, but what else is waiting for them there?

Ashford offers shelter at last, but little peace. Beyond its walls, refugees crowd the roads while militia drill, barricades stand ready, and rumours from the western coast grow darker with every telling. The Pale Flame provides food, beds, and a brief chance to recover, yet the city’s strained calm hides countless troubles among its streets and camps. With Westwatch still waiting beyond the horizon, the question remains: what will the travellers find in Ashford before the road calls them onward again?

Beyond the river, the westward road grows harsher. Food dwindles, rain closes in, abandoned farms line the way, and illness threatens to halt the journey before Ashford is even in sight. At a lonely shrine to Solverath, the prayers of strangers speak of raids, missing loved ones, and a Western Marches buckling under fear. And when the party meets troubled souls upon the road, survival will not be the only burden they carry - mercy, duty, and truth may prove heavier still.

The road to Ashford grows harder with every mile. With supplies thinning and the Western Marches under mounting strain, the travellers find their path blocked by a swollen river, an unsafe bridge, and an unexpected camp of Red Pikes waiting at the ford. What begins as another obstacle on an exhausting journey soon offers music, rivalry, drink, and uneasy companionship beneath the open sky. But the river is running high, Ashford still lies ahead, and even a night among friendly strangers can carry its own dangers.

The road to Ashford slows beneath the weight of sickness, hunger, and a stranded family with nowhere safe to turn. As the company lends what aid it can, the fading light brings dangers of its own, while troubling rumours drift east from an overcrowded and increasingly militarised Ashford. For a few hours, firelight, stories, and shared food offer comfort on the open plains—but the night has not finished with them yet, and some things refuse to remain quietly at rest.
