141 Why "Gaba/Traz" is not always the best option

    29/06/2026 | 18min
Episode 141 – Why "Gaba/Traz" is not always the best option

This episode was inspired by a lecture I gave at BVA Live 2026 and the ensuing questions and discussion about the use of Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals.

The truth is that while gabapentin and trazodone can be a good PVP combination for some canine patients, it should not be used as a "one size fits all" approach for all dogs requiring anxiolytic support at the veterinary clinic and we should, instead, consider each patient as an individual and tailor their medication regime accordingly.

In this episode I chat about:
    ·         Cats versus dogs when it comes to PVPs.
    ·         Why anxiolytic doses of gabapentin can cause vulnerability in canine patients with musculoskeletal disease.
    ·         Why trial doses at home are imperative.
    ·         Other options for PVP combinations.

If you are a vet who often reaches for "Gaba/Traz", then this episode is a good nudge to think about patient choices and other PVP options.

140 15 Minute Speed Coaching with Sharon Jones – Dogs and Car Journeys

    22/06/2026 | 23min
Episode 140 – 15 Minute Speed Coaching with Sharon Jones – Dogs and Car Journeys

Welcome to another 15-minute Speed Coaching Session for Veterinary and Pet Care Professionals!
The rules of the game are as follows:
    ·         Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted.
    ·         Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish…
    ·         Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started!

In this episode, I chat to Canine Dog Trainer and Behaviourist, Sharon Jones, about the challenges of working through cases where dogs show fear- or stress behaviours on car journeys.
How do we know if this is a physical health concern (nausea or pain), fear or anxiety, fear learning, anticipatory excitement, frustration or something else?
And, how do we start unpicking behaviours to find the emotional motivation and behavioural drivers?
Have a listen as we chat through different thoughts and approaches, which medications may be useful and the discussions we have about this topic on the ACVB List serve.

One of my passion projects – and indeed the topic of my residency research – is stress management during air travel in pets and while air- and car travel are different in some respects, they also share a LOT of commonalities.
Here's a link to my review paper on Feline Stress Management during Air Travel, which I mention in the episode, and, of course, so much of this information can be extrapolated to dogs too !

139 Can I offer Veterinary Behaviour Consultations without being a Trainer?

    15/06/2026 | 19min
Episode 139 – Can I offer Veterinary Behaviour Consultations without being a Trainer?

This episode was inspired by a Zoom Call question from one of my lovely participants of Learn To Speak Dog and Learn To Speak Cat, who is in the process of setting up a Veterinary Behaviour Service in a new hospital she has started working in.
Her concern is that she can't yet offer consultations as she has not yet found aligned trainers to work with who can support her in her cases.

What do you think my thoughts and advice were to her?
Have a listen to this episode to find out and to hear more about my own personal journey and how I currently manage the "Behaviour Modification" or "Training" element of the Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plan.

If you'd like the chance to ask me your questions in person, you can do that in our Live Group Zoom Calls in the following courses:
Learn To Speak Dog - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-dog
Learn To Speak Cat - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-cat
    Psychoactive - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive

And, of course, in my Membership Program – "The Behaviour Case Collective"

138 To Avoid or not to Avoid – That is the Question!

    08/06/2026 | 26min
138 To Avoid or not to Avoid – That is the Question!

The avoidance of triggers and stimuli is such an important part of the treatment plan and falls into the Management "M" of the "7 Ms" Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plan Template!
However, it is also the part that gets possibly the most pushback from caregivers for a number of different reasons.

In this episode, I chat through those reasons as well as why I believe avoidance is so important for brain processes and eventually achieving a successful outcome.
I also talk about the risks to the pet when we don't avoid and continue to expose them to threatening or frustrating triggers.

Finally, I talk about some of the strategies I use to get caregivers on board and how we eventually do start the process of re-introduction to those triggers, stimuli and contexts.

If you are a behaviourist or trainer working in practice, you may be very familiar with this topic and listening to my approach and reasoning may give you a different way of tackling some of these conversations.

If you'd like to learn more about the "7 Ms" approach to Veterianry Beahviour Treatment Plans, then my Masterclass on exactly this topic is for you:

    137 Interoception – The 8th Sense

    01/06/2026 | 28min
    Episode 137 – Interoception – The 8th Sense

This episode was inspired by the 3rd Case Call of "The Behaviour Case Collective" Membership where Dr Amber Batson and I co-presented a case where gastro-intestinal health had a big impact on Behaviour.
During this conversation, the idea of Interoception was spoken about, and I thought it would be a GREAT topic to dive into!

Interoception is one of the 3 "Hidden Senses" and is essentially a sensory system that provides a dialogue between the brain and the inside of the body.

In this episode you will learn:
    1.      What Interoception is and how it fits in with the other 7 senses.
    2.      How altered Interoception can affect our patients.
    3.      How to apply treatment and therapy strategies to improve Interoception.

I really hope you find this episode valuable and that it gives you food for thought when assessing your own Behaviour Patients!
