Through The Looking Glass

Há bandas que pertencem a um momento. E depois… há outras bandas que não aceitaram esse destino. Não porque fossem mais perfeitas. Ou mais bem-sucedidas. Ou mais protegidas. Mas porque continuaram.
Hoje… não vamos olhar para os anos 90 como um arquivo. Não vamos abrir uma gaveta. (pausa) Vamos entrar num concerto. Vamos sentir o ar. O calor das luzes. O peso do som no corpo. (pausa) Porque há músicas que não envelhecem. Mas mais do que isso… há bandas que recusam tornar-se passado.

There are bands that belong to a certain moment. And then… there are other bands that didn't accept that fate. Not because they were more perfect. Or more successful. Or more protected. But because they persevered.
Today… we're not going to look at the 90s as an archive. We're not going to open a drawer. (pause) We're going to go to a show. We're going to feel the air. The warmth of the lights. The weight of the sound on our bodies. (pause) Because there are songs that don't age. But more than that… there are bands that refuse to become the past.

Há momentos no cinema em que a história ainda mal começou… e já estamos dentro dela. Não foi o diálogo que nos levou até ali. Nem a imagem. Foi uma música. Hoje seguimos essas canções. Momentos em que o cinema abriu espaço… e deixou a música ocupar o centro da cena.
No outro lado do espelho, atravessamos algumas das bandas sonoras que mudaram a forma como lembramos certos filmes. Porque às vezes não recordamos apenas a imagem. Recordamos o instante exacto em que a música entrou.

There are moments in cinema where the story has barely begun… and we're already inside it. It wasn't the dialogue that led us there. Nor the image. It was a piece of music. Today we follow those pieces of music. Moments when cinema opened up space… and let the music take center stage.
On the other side of the mirror, we traverse some of the soundtracks that changed the way we remember certain films. Because sometimes we don't just remember the image. We remember the exact moment the music entered.

No escuro de uma taberna antiga, alguém começa a cantar. Não sabemos o nome. Não sabemos de onde veio. Apenas a voz — crua, inevitável — a abrir caminho no ar. Durante muito tempo pensou-se que esta música pertencia a Lisboa. Como as colinas. Como a luz. Como o Tejo. Mas algumas músicas escondem viagens dentro delas.
Hoje atravessamos o espelho para procurar o fado antes de ele se tornar fado. Antes da saudade. Talvez o fado não tenha nascido num lugar. Talvez tenha nascido em viagem.

In the darkness of an old tavern, someone begins to sing. We don't know the name. We don't know where it came from. Only the voice—raw, inevitable—making its way through the air. For a long time, it was thought that this music belonged to Lisbon. Like the hills. Like the light. Like the Tagus River. But some songs hide journeys within them.
Today we cross the mirror to search for fado before it becomes fado. Before saudade. Perhaps fado wasn't born in one place. Perhaps I was born on a journey.

Existe alguém deste lado do espelho que pede para ser revelado. Ele aprendeu cedo que o mundo observa mesmo quando parece distraído. Aprendeu que o erro ecoa mais do que as coisas em que acertamos. Aprendeu que o aplauso é amor — mas é um amor condicional.
Hoje atravessamos o espelho para encontrar um rei. Mas um rei que nunca descansou. Nem do ritmo. Nem da imagem. Nem do olhar alheio.
