London, October 1926. Sir Alistair Wilkes claims descent from the notorious John Wilkes, whose quarrels with George III's government scandalised eighteenth-century England, and he has invited the Belgian Detective and our narrator to dine in Belgrave Square. He promises the resurrection of a scandal that has slept for a hundred and sixty years.

Around his table: his second wife; his daughter by his first marriage; a former Under-Secretary at the Home Office; a red-faced Member of Parliament; a newspaper proprietor; an historian; and a wealthy American widow. Sir Alistair has arranged the seating so that they will quarrel. They do.

Then he announces that he holds evidence of a secret arrangement behind the famous Number Forty-Five, and that certain reputations were purchased at the expense of constitutional liberty. The papers are in a dispatch box in the library, in full view of everyone.

He withdraws to his study to take a telephone call and locks the door behind him. The minutes pass. When the door is forced, Sir Alistair lies dead beside his desk — and documents have vanished from a box that nobody touched.

    ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers and by the real eighteenth-century radical John Wilkes — but the plot, characters and text are entirely our own creation. Sir Alistair Wilkes and every character in this story are fictional. A short historical epilogue at the end tells the true story of John Wilkes and Number Forty-Five. No affiliation, endorsement, or official connection is implied.

    💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
A locked study, a cut telephone wire, and a box watched by everyone in the room. Who did you suspect first? 🕵️

A long evening with Judith Lee — two of her cases, back to back, because you have made it very clear that you cannot have too much of her.

Judith Lee, the teacher of the deaf who reads lips across a crowded room, in two cases: two young people whispering in a Brompton Road tea-shop at the start of the Fulham Mystery, and a ball off Leicester Square that becomes the most dangerous adventure she ever told.

A long Halloween evening with Father Brown — four of his cases back to back, with his friend Flambeau beside him in every one.

Four cases for Father Brown and Flambeau on Halloween night: a Scottish castle stripped of every scrap of gold, a mysterious prince on an island among the reeds, a sun-worshipping prophet above an office by the Thames, and a frozen churchyard where a national hero lies buried.
