Aligning Teams and Coaching for Client-Centered Success, Ep #524

    16/09/2026 | 20min
With over 45 years in engineering, enterprise software, sales leadership, and global sales enablement, Art Fromm joins us to share his thoughs on what sets exceptional sales leaders apart from sales managers, how to build high-performing, collaborative sales teams, and the importance of aligning around the client's buying journey rather than just the sales process. We discuss what makes coaching effective, how to leverage technology without losing the human touch, and which leading indicators really predict sales success.

    Outline of This Episode
    [00:00] Traits of effective leadership
[03:42] Aligning sales with buyer process
[08:32] Balancing AI and Human Thinking
    [11:03] Building strong client partnerships
    [14:01] Sales management do's and don'ts
    [17:07] Impact of sales methodology
Sales Leadership vs. Sales Management: Understanding the Difference
Sales management is primarily about executing the business—monitoring forecasts, managing pipelines, and ensuring activities are tracked. Sales leadership, on the other hand, is about changing the business: creating clarity, removing obstacles, cultivating culture, and inspiring teams to achieve more than they believed possible.
Organizations thrive when they strike the right balance—leveraging strong management for operational excellence and empowering visionary leadership to ignite motivation, foster trust, and drive innovation.

The DNA of Great Sales Leaders
Reflecting on decades of experience, Art identifies several key traits that set exceptional sales leaders apart:
Consistent Curiosity & Coachability: Top leaders ask questions, remain open to feedback, and are always learning.
Client Focus: They prioritize external and internal customers—striving to truly understand their needs and equip them for success.
Building Trust: Effective sales leaders foster both top-down and bottom-up trust. They lead with authority but drive buy-in and collaboration to achieve shared objectives.
Leaders recognize that motivated individuals deliver superior results—making collaboration and mutual understanding the foundation for sustained performance.

    Building High-Performance, Client-Centric Sales Teams
High-performing sales teams are unified around the client's buying journey, not just their own sales process. Too often, organizations focus inward—pushing opportunities through their defined stages and losing sight of the buyer's critical milestones.
    Art advocates for:
Aligning all go-to-market roles (sales, pre-sales, and customer success) around the client's process
Clarifying roles and shared accountability within the team
Leveraging technology and CRMs to facilitate—not complicate—selling and buying
When sales teams operate as a coordinated unit, customer outcomes improve, win rates rise, and engagement soars.

Technology, AI, and Human Insight in Sales Leadership
While artificial intelligence and advanced tech can streamline research and drive efficiency, Art Fromm stresses that competitive advantage still stems from genuine, human-to-human discovery and emotional intelligence. Leaders should use AI to augment—not replace—strategic thinking, preparation, and authentic customer engagement.

    Seamless Alignment Drives Lasting Impact
Aligning sales, pre-sales, and customer success around shared goals and frameworks fundamentally transforms results. It's not about hoping for improvement—it's about intentionally shaping the environment so that teams and clients alike thrive.
Great sales leadership means moving from silos to synergy, from seller-centric to client-centric, and from transactional management to transformative guidance.

Building High-Performance Teams with Humanity, Humor, and High Expectations, Ep #523

    09/09/2026 | 23min
On the show this week, I'm joined by John Klymshyn—multi-instrumentalist, composer, acclaimed author of The Ultimate Sales Manager's Guide and Open the Valve, and a seasoned leader in enterprise sales. We discuss the nuances of sales leadership versus sales management, exploring how culture, vision, and practical coaching distinguish the most successful teams. John shares his strategies for building high-performance sales teams, the critical traits of effective sales leaders, and why humanity, humor, and high expectations are the pillars of sustainable sales excellence.

    Outline of This Episode

[00:00] Distinction between sales leadership and sales management

[03:42] Sales as a performance profession

[06:45] Three key concepts: humanity, humor, and high expectations

    [09:25] Building a high-performance sales team

[13:12] Importance of regular team check-ins

[16:20] The impact of technology and AI on sales leadership

[19:52] Real-world example of leadership transformation

    The Essence of Sales Leadership

Sales leadership isn't about day-to-day oversight or hand-to-hand combat in the trenches. It's about shaping the culture and vision of the sales organization, emanating from the top and permeating to every client-facing role—even those not carrying traditional sales titles.

For John, robust sales leadership starts with articulating how the organization wants to be perceived—by clients, partners, vendors, and even internally. This top-down ethos inspires pride, integrity, and service, enabling a healthier and more growth-oriented company. Sales management, by contrast, is the ongoing daily interaction between leaders and salespeople, focused on performance and tactical guidance.

The Characteristics of Great Sales Leaders

John identifies three core traits in high-impact sales leaders: humanity, humor, and high expectations.
Humanity: The best leaders relate authentically to their teams, recognizing the real challenges, aspirations, and lives of their salespeople.

Humor: Lightness and laughter are not frivolous—they "soften the heart, which opens the mind". Humor makes feedback less threatening and keeps morale high, especially when the stakes are high.

High Expectations: Top leaders don't settle for mediocrity. They maintain demanding standards, pushing each team member to stretch and grow.

Combined, these three traits build environments where trust, engagement, and accountability thrive, paving the way for sustainable success.

Achieving High Performance—and Harmony—on Sales Teams

One myth John dispels is the idea that every sales team can be stacked solely with "A-players." In reality, any team of five or more will naturally include top performers, reliable "B-players," and some underperformers. The key to consistency isn't seeking perfection but identifying the five essential attributes of your ideal contributors, then cultivating and hiring for those.

That way the focus shifts from unattainable balance to the healthier concept of harmony, which is more sustainable and realistic—especially in sales, where there isn't always a clear-cut separation of work and life.

Coaching and the Human Connection in a Digital World

While AI, CRM platforms, and sales enablement tools are transforming the profession, John points out that nothing replaces the impact of a live conversation. Regular coaching sessions—his "15 minutes of fame"—give salespeople a moment to shine, discuss wins, articulate upcoming goals, and voice their needs. Coaching is most effective when it goes beyond metrics, focusing on the person rather than just the pipeline.

Leaders should recognize the individuality of each team member and resist the urge to create clones. The best thing to do is aim to harness diverse strengths, not impose your own methods.

Essential Tools and Tactics for Successful Key Account Managers, Ep #522

    02/09/2026 | 23min
Key account management (KAM) is one of the most impactful strategies for driving sustainable business growth, particularly in professional services and technology sectors. In this episode of the show, I welcome bestselling author and LinkedIn Top Sales Voice, Amy Franko, to discuss best practices and common pitfalls in key account management. We explore how sales professionals can strategically differentiate key accounts, build robust relationships, and design actionable plans that propel long-term organizational success.

    Outline of This Episode
00:00 Building mutual value with clients
05:27 Account strategy versus selling tactics
    08:33 Importance of stakeholder mapping
11:43 Choosing and using CRM tools
    14:15 Emphasizing simplicity and accountability
16:22 Advisory intelligence and client focus
19:31 Strategic account planning at trade show

    Defining Your Key Accounts
Limiting the definition of a key account to revenue figures is short-sighted, your key accounts should be identified by a blend of factors such as strategic fit with your business, alignment to your ideal client profile (ICP), influence in the market, growth potential, and—crucially—mutual value creation. This last component is often missed, it's not enough to deliver value to the client; the engagement should have reciprocal benefits that strengthen the partnership.
A frequent organizational misstep is treating all customers as key accounts, which Amy warns only dilutes the effectiveness of key account management and adds unnecessary complexity. Focusing your energy and resources on accounts that are genuinely key to your organization drives profound impact.

    Strategic Upleveling
The move from an individual seller to a strategic account manager demands a fundamental shift in approach. While sales motions and traditional deal-closing actions retain importance, KAMs have to elevate their focus to see the bigger picture — developing multi-faceted relationships, engaging in more sophisticated conversations, and aligning more deeply with the client's broader business objectives.

Building a Key Account Strategy Anchored in the ICP
An actionable key account strategy is predicated on having a well-defined ideal client profile. Organizations should first understand what their best customers look like before aligning accounts to that blueprint. This strategic groundwork enables clarity in which accounts warrant intensive resource allocation and which do not.
Only after this strategic foundation is laid should tactical sales and marketing motions come into play. Integrating both functions ensures your organization is not only selling effectively but also shaping market perception and continually nurturing the account for long-term partnership.

Stakeholder Mapping is the Linchpin of Success
Knowledge of stakeholders across multiple layers and departments within a client organization is non-negotiable. You need to be mapping who the decision makers, influencers, and advocates you interact with are. Advocates, or champions, are vital because they support your initiatives internally, provide access and intelligence, and help de-risk account dependency by ensuring that you're not reliant on a single relationship.
Sometimes, your team's understanding of a client can be limited by assumptions or blind spots. Bringing in external perspectives—whether from a coach or a fresh pair of eyes—can help uncover missed relationships and figure out where the real decision-making power lies.

Network Your Way to Sales Success, Ep #521

    26/08/2026 | 23min
This week's conversation focuses on the enduring necessity of a generous, relationship-first approach to sales. We discuss the power of "giving first," which means genuinely contributing to a prospect's or client's success before expecting anything in return. Another key factor that emerged was consistency. Mediocre actions done regularly outperform sporadic brilliance. Building a steady, visible presence in your digital community will create more long-term opportunities than hoping for a viral hit.

    Outline of This Episode

    00:00 Networking by giving first
    05:55 Social selling success
    08:01 Building trust through networking
    12:08 Being genuine in communication
16:36 The value of intentional lead generation
19:25 Tips for customer call etiquette
20:58 Networking and asking for help

Pitfalls to Avoid in Digital Selling

Sending "social spam," or templated, irrelevant messages, quickly erodes credibility. Another mistake is inefficient manual processes; automating low-value, repetitive tasks (like contact research) frees your time for relationship-building and creative selling. We explore the dangers of being overly selective or "social climbing" in networking. Dismissing connections that don't seem immediately useful overlooks the hidden value within wider networks.

Mastering Prospecting and Lead Generation—Top Tips

Our experts generously share their prospecting advice, offering actionable dos and don'ts:

Do follow up—persistently and methodically. Consistency in follow-up is often the differentiator between mediocrity and mastery.

Do be authentic. Scripts and borrowed lines ring hollow if they don't fit your personality. Clients respond better to genuine interactions.

Do know your value proposition. Clarity about the unique benefits you offer makes outreach more compelling and memorable 13:22.

On the flip side, don't "show up and throw up"—which means bombarding prospects with sales pitches rather than understanding their needs. Overlong emails or messages dilute your impact and lose the recipient's interest. Above all, never start a relationship with a lie. Claiming prior outreach that never happened can instantly destroy trust.

The Power of Storytelling in Sales

Shane Gibson also shares a story about a Ford salesperson in a smaller market who embraced digital storytelling. Instead of cold pitching, he used Facebook to highlight customer experiences and moments at the dealership. His content educated and entertained his audience, resulting in sales growth from 13 to 25 vehicles per month in under 30 days—all thanks to referral trust within his social network.

Re-engaging your existing customer base for referrals or to expand your business is gold. Asking for direct introductions from connections—rather than settling for just a name—can open doors to high-level opportunities and big wins. Overcoming fear requires preparation, a clear value proposition, and sometimes warming up the approach through preliminary research. Confidence is built by knowing your purpose and doing the hard work upfront.

Practical Do's and Don'ts for Lead Generation, Ep #520

    19/08/2026 | 18min
This week I'm joined by three inspiring industry experts, Mark Hunter, Sonia Dumas, and Diane Helbig, who unravel the secrets behind effective prospecting and lead generation. We discuss best practices and attitude shifts, and each guest shares their story sharing their experience of the transformative power of the right prospecting process.

You'll be inspired by my guests' essential prospecting and lead generation do's and don'ts that have shaped successful outreach strategies. As well as tactical advice, we also dig into the mindset changes necessary for long-term improvement.

    Outline of This Episode

    00:00 Persistence in Sales Outreach

04:21 Phone call mix-up and reschedule

    07:57 Shifting your prospecting mindset

10:11 Enjoying Prospecting and Lead Generation

    15:01 Friend's business networking story

16:42 Mastering the art of prospecting

    Make Follow-Up Your Secret Weapon

Kicking things off, Mark Hunter distills years of frontline experience into three must-do actions: always follow up and follow through—treating every prospect touchpoint as important—and focus on uncovering insights about your prospects rather than over-sharing about yourself. He cautions against spamming email blasts, giving up after too few attempts, and information overload that removes your chance to engage. His story of landing a meeting with a hard-to-reach CEO by doing thoughtful research and perfectly timing his call shows that success favors persistence, preparation, and a little creative timing.

Prospecting as an Adventure, Not a Chore

Sonia Dumas flips the prospecting narrative by stressing the importance of clarity and enjoyment. Her top don'ts include not chasing leads until your message and buyer's journey are crystal clear and avoiding the trap of treating prospecting like an uninspired numbers game. She recommends that listeners have fun, tailor a prospecting plan that fits you, and consistently deliver value. Sonia's story highlights how genuine enthusiasm and casual connection can lead to surprising opportunities—demonstrating that every conversation, no matter how informal, is a potential gateway to new business.

The Power of a Warm Intro

Diane Helbig champions researching prospects before outreach, looking for meetings over immediate sales, and sharpening focus to micro-targeted characteristics. Her don'ts warn against casting too wide a net, trying to close deals in a first contact, and dropping prospecting routines when business picks up. Sonia discusses the magic of a well-executed referral system and shares more about a gift basket entrepreneur who turned warm introductions—and quick follow-up—into a 4-for-5 win rate with key prospects.
