Errata: uma revisão feminista à história do design gráfico português / a feminist amendment to graphic design history

O episódio 23 com a arquiteta, investigadora, professora e ativista feminista Patrícia Pedrosa foi uma conversa sobre o que partilhamos nos nossos caminhos de investigação. Desde que comecei a Errata que tenho acompanhado de perto o trabalho da Patrícia, em particular o seu esforço continuado de documentação e mapeamento das mulheres arquitetas em Portugal. A abordagem crítica à arquitetura que a Patrícia desenvolve atravessa vários projetos: o [email protected] – Women architects in Portugal, o livro "Arquitetas e a construção da visibilidade," publicado pela Circo de Ideias, e a exposição Arquitectas da Liberdade. Há ainda outros projetos a ganhar forma, incluindo uma série de livros, sobre os quais falamos neste episódio. Em comum, todas estas iniciativas têm uma vontade muito clara de fazer justiça ao trabalho das mulheres em Portugal, e uma preocupação constante com a forma como a história é escrita, com quem fica visível e com quem continua a ser omitida.  Episode 23 with architect, researcher, professor, and feminist activist Patrícia Pedrosa was a conversation about what we share in our research paths. Since I started Errata, I have closely followed Patrícia's work, particularly her ongoing effort to document and map women architects in Portugal. Patrícia's critical approach to architecture spans several projects: [email protected] – Women architects in Portugal, the book "Arquitetas e a construção da visibilidade," and the exhibition Arquitectas da Liberdade. Other projects are also taking shape, including a series of books, which we discuss in this episode. In common, all these initiatives share a very clear desire to do justice to the work of women in Portugal, and a constant concern about how history is written, who becomes visible, and who continues to be omitted.

O episódio 22 com a investigadora feminista Manuela Tavares abre uma janela para um momento de força coletiva e ativismo no Portugal do pós 25 de Abril de 1974 que aos olhos de hoje parece excepcional. Dado o conservadorismo político que está a surgir com cada vez mais força em Portugal e no mundo, procurei no relato da Manuela Tavares pistas para continuar o trabalho feminista. Os recentes ataques aos direitos humanos são alarmantes e para compreendê-los fui conversar com uma das mulheres que esteve presente nas lutas feministas no momento de ruptura com a ditatura em Portugal. A Manuela foi uma das mulheres que em 1976 fundou a UMAR, na altura chamada União de Mulheres Anti Fascistas e Revolucionárias e hoje União Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta. Com as mulheres do bairro do Pragal teve a coragem e audácia de ocupar um palácio para construírem uma creche que as ajudasse a criar os seus filhos. Participou no primeiro momento de ativismo político no parlamento português, como parte da campanha da despenalização do aborto, que durou anos e da qual participou ativamente.  Em 2011, publicou o livro 'Feminismos, Percursos e Desafios (1947-2007)'. Na conversa com a Manuela encontrei energia e força e uma história tremenda de entreajuda, amizade, e amor entre mulheres e pelas mulheres. Fiquei emocionada e muito inspirada com este percurso. A voz da Manuela é calma e reconfortante, talvez exatamente o que precisamos agora.  Episode 22 with feminist researcher Manuela Tavares opens a window onto a moment of collective strength and activism in post-April 25, 1974 Portugal that, in today's eyes, seems exceptional. Given the political conservatism that is emerging with increasing force in Portugal and the world, I sought in Manuela Tavares' account clues to continue the necessary feminist work. The recent attacks on human rights are alarming, and to understand them, I spoke with one of the women who was present in the feminist struggles at the moment of rupture with the dictatorship in Portugal. Manuela was one of the women who, in 1976, founded UMAR, at the time called the Union of Anti-Fascist and Revolutionary Women. With the women of the Pragal neighborhood, she had the courage and audacity to occupy a palace to build a daycare center to help them raise their children. She participated in the first happening of political activism in the Portuguese parliament, as part of the campaign for the decriminalization of abortion, which lasted for years and in which she actively participated. In 2011, she published the book 'Feminisms, Paths and Challenges (1947-2007)'. In my conversation with Manuela, I found energy and strength and a tremendous story of mutual support, friendship, and love among women and for women. I was moved and very inspired by this journey. Manuela's voice is calm and comforting, perhaps exactly what we need now. 

Episode 21 is a conversation with Abbie Vickress and Laura Parke, the duo of designers and educators behind the project Imperfect Index. Imperfect index is an initiative that looks at discrimination in design by giving space to ideas and projects that challenge the past in graphic design history, and — through a series of talks and publications—aims to collect voices that have been neglected, finding a way to look forward to a more diverse future in design practice, education and history. In this conversation we talked about cataloguing and indexing systems in graphic design history. Discussed notions of success and perfection in design discourse. We talked about how history can be made differently and how their initiative is working against mainstream design writing. But, we also talked about trust and care, self-doubt, and mostly imperfections.  

Episode 20 with designer, writer, teacher and filmmaker Briar Levit is about the feminist curiosity to dig deep and look for untold stories. In our conversation, we discussed the motivation to dismantle the canon in graphic design history, the elitism in the profession and why success means different things for different people. We discussed the process behind her film 'Graphic Means', the development of the book 'Baseline Shift', the ambitious 'People's Graphic Design Archive', her interview book 'On design, friendship and feminism' and what future projects Briar is cooking.    

O episódio 19 com a designer e troublemaker Raquel Gomes é um diálogo entre duas feministas sobre educação em design, sobre como se aprende e sobre como se ensina. A conversa reflete sobre o processo que a levou a analisar criticamente os caminhos de educação que percorre, o peso que o feminismo teve nesse estudo e como chegou ao formato final do seu projeto final de mestrado: o workshop Feminist Design Power Tools. Falamos sobre as expectativas e os métodos usados no workshop e sobre as repercussões desse processo.  A Raquel cresceu em São Miguel e hoje está sediada em Lisboa. Completou uma licenciatura e um mestrado em Arquitectura, mas foi no Design onde encontrou a sua voz. Em 2022 terminou a licenciatura em Design de Comunicação e tem desde aí praticado design de forma independente ou em colaboração. Em 2025, completou o mestrado também na Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa onde propõe várias POWER TOOLS: para uma pedagogia feminista em design. Episode 19 with designer and troublemaker Raquel Gomes is a dialogue between two feminists about design education, about how we learn and how we teach. The conversation reflects on the process that led her to critically analyze the educational paths she has followed, the importance that feminism had in this study and how she arrived at the final format of her final master's project: the Feminist Design Power Tools workshop. We talked about the expectations and methodolofies used in the workshop and what consequences and conclusions she reached after it. Raquel grew up in São Miguel island and is now based in Lisbon. She completed a degree and a master's degree in Architecture, but it was in Design that she found her voice. In 2022 she graduated in Communication Design and since then she has been practicing design independently or in collaboration. In 2025, Raquel completed her master's degree at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where she proposes a set of 'POWER TOOLS: towards a feminist pedagogy in design'.
