About the author:
Prem Parkash (7 April 1932 – 30 March 2025) was an Indian writer from Punjab, regarded as one of the major short story writers in post-1947 East Punjabi literature. Also known as Prem Parkash Khannvi, he was born in Nawanshahar and worked as a farmer, teacher, editor, and translator before editing an Urdu newspaper in Jalandhar and later working as a sub-editor for Hind Samachar. In 1970 he co-founded the literary magazine Lakeer with Surjit Hans. His work centered on social and sexual taboos, and his controversial novel Dastavez, about the Naxalite movement in Punjab, appeared in 1973. He was a Sahitya Akademi Award recipient and passed away in Jalandhar on 30 March 2025 at age 92.

Santokh Singh Dhir (1920–2010) was a distinguished Punjabishort-story writer, poet and novelist associated with progressive literature.Born in Bassi Pathana, Punjab, he devoted his life to writing about rural society, working people, poverty and social change with realism and deep human sympathy. His notable stories include Koi Ik Svaar, Sanjhi Kandh and Saver HonTak. In 1996, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short-story collection Pakhi. He was also honoured as Shiromani Punjabi Sahitkar in 1991.

Mohan Rakesh (8 January 1925–3 December 1972), born Madan Mohan Guglani in Amritsar, was one of the most influential figures in modern Hindi literature. He was a leading voice of the Nayi Kahani or “New Story” movement, which brought greater psychological realism and contemporary social concerns to Hindi fiction.
A playwright, novelist, short-story writer and essayist, Rakesh explored loneliness, fractured relationships, moral conflict and the struggles of India’s urban middle class. His acclaimed plays include Ashadh Ka Ek Din, Lehron Ke Rajhans and Aadhe Adhure. His notable novels include Andhere Band Kamre and Na Aane Wala Kal.
His powerful short story Malbe Ka Malik examines the pain of Partition through themes of displacement, betrayal, guilt and lost belonging. Through his sensitive characterization and restrained storytelling, Mohan Rakesh left an enduring mark on Hindi literature and theatre.

In a writing career spanning six decades, Sarna produced several volumes of poetry, short stories and novels, many of which have been translated into other Indian languages and made into telefilms. Sarna's work has received critical acclaim. He was the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his writing, including the Sahitya Akademi Award. He was recognised as the Shiromani Punjabi Sahitkar by the Government of Punjab in 1989. He was married to noted Punjabi translator and poet Surjit Sarna.
