Who gets to decide what makes a Pilates teacher qualified? And who's holding the organizations that set those standards accountable?
Professional alliances promise to uphold standards, protect the integrity of Pilates, and support our industry. But what happens when we start questioning the standards themselves—and the money, influence, and interests behind them?
In this provocative episode, Hannah challenges the role of professional associations and asks whether the systems we've created are genuinely serving teachers, studio owners, and the people we teach.
Are we building a stronger profession, or have we confused credentials with competence and membership with credibility?
It's time for some uncomfortable questions about education, transparency, accountability, and what it really means to uphold a professional standard.
Because if we're going to hold teachers to a higher standard, shouldn't we be holding the standard-setters to one, too?
Join the conversation. We'd love to hear what you think.

Your Pilates class numbers are low. Does that mean you’re doing something wrong?
Not necessarily.
Class attendance is influenced by plenty of things outside a teacher’s control: the time slot, class format, pricing, seasonality, studio marketing and how long the class has been on the schedule. But there are also things we can influence as teachers.
In this episode, Hannah and Christian share 10 concrete things Pilates and movement teachers can do to help build classes people want to return to. We talk about the client experience, building relationships, programming, consistency, teaching both beginners and regulars, and understanding what your attendance numbers are actually telling you.
We also look at this from the studio owner’s perspective. When a class is struggling, how do you know whether you have a teaching problem, a scheduling problem, a marketing problem—or a class that simply needs more time?
Instead of only asking, “Why aren’t people coming?”
Maybe the better question is: “Why would someone choose to come back?”

Learning the exercises is one thing. Standing in front of a room full of people and actually teaching them is something completely different.
If you’re in Pilates teacher training or have recently started teaching, there’s a good chance you’ve had moments when you’ve wondered whether you’re actually any good at this. There is so much to remember, and suddenly you’re expected to cue, observe, plan, adapt, communicate and somehow keep the whole class moving at the same time.
In this short solo episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah talks about why those first teaching experiences can feel so overwhelming and shares some of the things that helped her become a better teacher—including having to learn how to teach all over again when she began teaching in German.
This is a little encouragement, along with some practical advice, for the new teacher who doesn't feel ready yet.
You don't need to have it all figured out. You need opportunities to practice, reflect, learn from other teachers and keep showing up.
Your first classes aren't there to prove that you're already a great teacher. They're part of how you become one.

What Does Progression Actually Mean in Pilates?
We talk about progression constantly in Pilates. We progress an exercise, progress a client, add a spring, change the leverage, increase the challenge or move someone into a more advanced class.
But are we always talking about the same thing?
In this solo episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah separates two ideas that often get mixed together: progressive overload as a principle of exercise science and progression as part of becoming a more experienced, capable mover.
What does progressive overload actually require? How can we create it on the Mat, Reformer and other Pilates equipment? And does making an exercise more complicated necessarily mean we've progressed anything?
The conversation also looks beyond physical intensity. Greater precision, control, understanding and the ability to make good choices for your own body can all tell us something about how a client is developing.
Because perhaps the question we should be asking isn't always, "How can I make this harder?"
It's "What am I actually trying to develop?"
At Performance Fit Pilates in Nürnberg, progression is part of how we approach both group classes and personal training. Our teaching combines Pilates with current exercise science to help clients build strength, movement skills, confidence and greater independence over time.

Do Your Clients Know the Names of the Exercises?
Mermaid. Teaser. Elephant. Short Spine.
We use exercise names every day as Pilates teachers, but how much do those names actually matter to the people we're teaching?
In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian look at something that seems incredibly simple: naming the exercises we teach. What starts as a conversation about terminology quickly becomes a much bigger discussion about communication, learning, confidence, and belonging.
When does knowing the name help someone understand and remember what they're learning? When does Pilates terminology become jargon that makes a new client feel like everyone else received a handbook they somehow missed? And are we using certain words because they help our clients—or because they demonstrate what we know?
Exercise names can create a shared language between teachers and clients, but knowing the vocabulary isn't the goal. The real question is how we use language to help the person in front of us learn.
At Performance Fit Pilates in Nuremberg, we want our clients to learn Pilates, not simply follow along with a workout. Across our Pilates Mat, Reformer and equipment classes, we introduce exercise names and terminology as part of the learning process while making sure new clients never feel they are expected to already know the language. Over time, that shared vocabulary can help clients become more confident, knowledgeable and independent in their practice.
