Midlife Stress: Is Your Nervous System Stuck in Overdrive? An Interview With Jane Ollis
13/09/2026 | 36minSend us Fan Mail
Have you ever wondered why, in your 40s or 50s, you suddenly don't seem to cope with the stress the way you used to? Is it just getting older, is it hormones, or is it something much deeper happening inside your nervous system?
In this episode, we're joined by medical biochemist, central nervous system expert, and founder of Sona, Jane Ollis, to unpack the science. We explore why stress isn't actually the enemy, why recovery is becoming one of the most important health habits in midlife, what heart rate variability can tell us about our resilience, and the simple, evidence-based strategies that can help you feel calmer, healthier, and more in control.
So whether you're feeling burnt out, or simply want to perform at your best for the decades ahead, this episode is for you.

We've had a few weeks off over August, but while we've been away, the world hasn't exactly stood still.
So today we're having a bit of a catch-up - what's happened in the world, what's caught our attention, and what does any of it actually mean for us?
From Meta and our relationship with social media, to the new UK government, gold quietly moving from the US to London, and what's happening in the bond markets and our pensions.
We'll also touch on the idea of the 100-year life, and perhaps most importantly, what September feels like as a natural point to stop, take stock and ask: what are we going to do differently?

Let me ask you a question. If nothing changed over the next five years - if you kept living exactly as you are today - how would you honestly feel?
It’s all easy to slip into patterns in life, so though we might be successful, busy, doing all the things we thought we were supposed to do… something feels missing.
So in today's episode, I'm talking about one of the biggest hidden challenges of midlife: how we gradually drift onto autopilot without even realising it. I'll explore why success doesn't always bring fulfilment, why the second half of life asks different questions to the first, and, most importantly, how you can start living more intentionally again.
So, if you've ever caught yourself wondering, "Is this really it?" then this episode is for you.

Relationships can be one of the most rewarding parts of life... but they can also be one of the most confusing, especially in midlife.
Many women tell us they feel like the man they love has changed. He's become quieter, more distant, or harder to connect with. At the same time, many men say they don't even recognise themselves anymore.
So what's really going on?
In today's episode, we're joined by one of the world's leading relationship coaches and author of Cracking The Man Code, Mat Boggs, to unpack what's happening beneath the surface. We explore what women often misunderstand about men, why so many men seem to pull away in midlife, what they're actually craving in a relationship, and the communication tools that can help create deeper connection.
Whether you're in a long-term relationship or dating again in midlife, this is a practical conversation packed with insights and simple takeaways you can start using straight away.

In this episode we’re discussing whether there’s a midlife moment going on?
When we launched The Midlife Mentors podcast back in 2019, people told us using the term midlife was a bad idea as no one liked it. Midlife wasn't a fashionable subject. It was something people associated with crisis, decline or simply getting older, not a stage of life people actively wanted to talk about.
Fast forward to today and it feels like midlife is everywhere. From menopause and longevity to healthspan, hormones and even how employers think about an ageing workforce, something has definitely shifted.
So is this just a moment in the spotlight? Or are we witnessing the beginning of a genuine reinvention of the way we view midlife that's changing what we think is possible? And what exciting things might come next?
